A low fatality rate but severe health consequences related to COVID-19

Although few reliable scientific data are currently available, the virus's fatality rate is estimated to be between 0.2 percent and 3 percent. Furthermore, healthcare professionals report that the majority of coronavirus (COVID-19) victims were elderly (people over 80 years old are the most at risk) or had pre-existing conditions. COVID-19 does not systematically cause death in infected individuals: indeed, the majority of them recover. However, the pandemic posed a challenge to the healthcare systems of affected countries, notably causing hospital overcrowding. Additionally, some people who survived the virus experienced symptoms lasting beyond four weeks after infection, known as "long COVID." These symptoms can include fatigue, respiratory issues, pain, skin or eye problems, digestive disorders, or sensory abnormalities. In the United Kingdom, for example, in April 2022, 1,793,000 people were suffering from long COVID. Moreover, beyond the health consequences, the pandemic also had a significant economic impact on the entire population.

The significant economic consequences of the pandemic

Governments worldwide adopted various strategies to combat the pandemic, but the economic consequences related to the crisis were severe globally. The COVID-19 virus appeared on November 16, 2019, in Wuhan, China, then gradually spread worldwide, making lockdowns necessary, which greatly impacted the global economy, notably through reduced or halted production of certain goods and disruption of supply chains. Thus, France's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) experienced a recession of almost -8 percent in 2020. The tourism sector was one of the most affected by the pandemic. In France, missing tourism expenditures were estimated to be responsible for a drop in overall consumption of more than 12 percent after the first lockdown in 2020.
