Number of coronavirus infections by country worldwide January 8, 2023
This statistic shows the number of people infected with the coronavirus COVID-19 worldwide as of January 8, 2023, by country. It can be observed that out of 657.97 million infections to date, only 10.56 million were located in China, which was initially the global epicenter of the outbreak. As of January 8, 2023, the United States had the highest number of infected people (99.42 million) and deaths due to COVID-19. Nevertheless, this virus is not systematically fatal for infected individuals: several cases of recoveries have also been recorded.
Coronaviruses
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as MERS or SARS. But the virus in question here is a new coronavirus that has been named SARS-CoV-2.
From the Chinese outbreak to the pandemic
Since December 2019, a new strain of coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2 was detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan, in Hubei province. According to the investigation by Chinese authorities, people infected with the virus contracted it by consuming products (some of which are sold illegally) of animal origin from a large city market, the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market. Within a month, what was initially a geographically limited outbreak turned into a pandemic, affecting several people in other countries. This was notably due to the period during which the virus spread: the Chinese New Year took place during the weekend of January 25, with the very significant population movement flows it induces worldwide.
