The data represent minimal estimates of the actual number of lives lost during migration. Only individuals who died during their journey from their country of residence to another country are recorded. A person is counted when evidence of death or disappearance is provided to the authorities. For information on the survey methodology, please refer to the source page.

This statistic represents the number of migrants who died on migration routes worldwide between 2024 and September 18, 2024. Many migrants lose their lives on migration routes. In 2016, notably due to the Syrian crisis which caused a significant migratory flow, nearly 8,000 individuals died worldwide. Conversely, the year 2020 recorded the fewest deaths, as the Covid-19 pandemic led to border closures and thus a decline in departures. The Mediterranean Sea remained by far the deadliest region, with more than 30,000 migrants missing since 2014.
The deadliest year was 2023, with 8,606 migrants deceased.
