The share of citizens who trust the European Union (EU) varies by country. In 2022, within the European Union, there were ** countries where less than half of the population indicated they trusted the EU. Among them were Italy, which in 2022 also gave many votes to the far right in the legislative elections, Austria, as well as France, where only ** percent of respondents said they trusted the EU. But in the majority of EU countries, more than half of the citizens trusted the EU, with the highest levels of trust observed in Malta (** percent), Lithuania (** percent), Portugal (** percent), Denmark (** percent), and Poland (** percent).
The countries where the largest share of respondents indicated they did not trust the EU included Greece (** percent), Cyprus (** percent), and France (** percent). It is worth noting that Italy is the only mixed country with ** percent trusting and ** percent not trusting the EU.
