This statistic indicates the total number of mobile phones shipped worldwide from the first quarter of 2009 to the fourth quarter of 2014. 310.5 million mobile phones were shipped in the first quarter of 2010. In the second quarter of 2013, this number reached 432.1 million.

Global mobile phone shipments - additional information

In the fourth quarter of 2013, a record number of mobile phones were shipped worldwide, with figures exceeding 488 million units shipped. This brought the total volume of mobile phones shipped throughout 2013 to more than 1.82 billion units. In the United States, 76.8 percent of the population owned a mobile phone in 2012, and this figure is expected to rise to 79 percent in 2016. Smartphone usage is also increasing: 63.5 percent of the U.S. population is expected to own a smart device by 2017, up from 38.7 percent in 2012. Internationally, smartphone penetration among the global population is expected to reach 34 percent in 2017, compared to 19.8 percent in 2013.

About 450 million of the mobile phones shipped in 2013 were Samsung devices, compared to 153 million Apple iPhones. Consequently, Samsung sold 444 million units to end users in 2013, and Apple’s sales to consumers exceeded 150 million. The last quarter of 2013 marked a milestone for Apple, as iPhone sales accounted for more than 10 percent of new mobile phone sales for the first time since its launch in 2007. Nokia also held a significant share of the global market in 2013, with mobile phone sales to end users reaching more than 250 million units.
