Media consumption in the United States - Additional information
Local TVB proved to be the most important media for consumers in the United States in April 2014. In a report detailing the distribution of time spent with media per day compared to the percentage of advertising spending in the U.S. in 2013, 38 percent of Americans invested 38 percent of their media time watching television. This implies that they spent more time on this activity than on the Internet, press, radio, or mobile. Television also accounted for 45 percent of advertising investment in the United States, meaning that advertisers heavily invest in the media most popular among consumers.
In 2013, each U.S. citizen spent an average of 303 minutes per day watching television, which decreased from 327 minutes per day in 2010. Consumers, in 2013, spent less time reading newspapers and magazines with only 16 and 11 minutes per day, respectively.
In a global survey conducted in January and February 2014, 49 percent of U.S. respondents stated that they accessed news through printed newspapers. Likewise, 33 percent of U.S. respondents said they accessed news through online newspapers. These percentages are low compared to those of Finland, where 79 percent of respondents say they access news through printed newspapers and 82 percent through online newspapers.
