While in 2022, 68 percent of French people are aware of the #metoo and #balancetonporc movements and understand what they are about, 14 percent of French people claim not to know these movements. This corresponds to more than one person out of ten.
The #metoo movement is a social movement against sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and rape culture. It originated in 2017, with the use of this hashtag on social networks by people, mostly women, who denounce behaviors of sexual harassment and sexual assault they have experienced.
The #balancetonporc movement is a similar movement: women denounce their sexual aggressor on social networks.
