Deceased on September 26, 2019, Jacques Chirac is one of the eight Presidents of the Republic that France has had since 1958. Having led the country for twelve years, the founder of the RPR is among the heads of state who have most impacted the French people and whom they remember fondly. He also served as the mayor of Paris from 1977 to 1995 and was Prime Minister under President François Mitterrand for two years.

Thus, when the French were asked about the image they would retain of Mr. Chirac, nearly one-third responded that they would remember him as a likable person who loved life. Eighteen percent also said they would continue to see him as a great statesman. However, seven percent stated that they would remember him as a President who made few reforms.
