Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are gaseous halogenated compounds used as replacements for substances that deplete the ozone layer, but they contribute to the greenhouse effect. They are among the six main greenhouse gases listed in the Kyoto Protocol.
Hydrofluorocarbons account for about 90 percent of fluorinated gas emissions, and the EU is working to phase them out by 2050. They are mainly used to absorb heat in refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and heat pumps; as propellants in asthma sprays and technical aerosols; as blowing agents for foams; and in fire extinguishers. In 2021, they predominated in the wholesale and retail trade sectors, as well as in automobile and motorcycle repair.
