The source adds the following information: "This indicator shows trends related to anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases contained in the 'Kyoto basket.' The 'Kyoto basket' includes the following greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and so-called fluorinated gases (hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, and sulfur hexafluoride — SF6). These gases are grouped into a single unit according to factors corresponding to their specific global warming potential (GWP). Aggregated greenhouse gas emissions are expressed in units of CO2 equivalent. The indicator does not include emissions and absorptions related to land use, land-use change, and forestry (LULUCF); it also does not include emissions from international maritime transport, but it does include emissions from international aviation as well as indirect CO2 emissions. CO2 emissions from biomass with energy recovery are reported 'for information only,' in accordance with UNFCCC guidelines, and are not included in national greenhouse gas totals. Emissions per capita highlight differences between the specific emissions of member states. Emission targets for countries are not indicated in emissions per capita but are calculated relative to the Kyoto base year."
