In 2025, the carbon footprint of battery cells produced in China averaged ** kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent per kilowatt-hour, well above that of batteries manufactured in the European Union. Optimized EU-produced batteries would reach a carbon footprint as low as ** kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent per kilowatt-hour, an objective set by the EU Commission that has not yet been achieved.
The use of renewable energy for battery cell production, recycled materials, and low-impact mining and refining of battery components are some of the elements in battery manufacturing and value chains that will contribute to the reduction of the carbon footprint of this energy storage technology.
