To meet its renewable energy targets, the European Union is expected to need *** gigawatts of energy storage capacity by 2030. For 2050, energy storage requirements in the region should add up to *** gigawatts.
The deployment of renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, is expected to grow considerably in the coming decades as the EU races to decarbonize its energy supply by 2050. There is consensus that energy storage technologies will be imperative to maintain system reliability in such a scenario, without depending on gas turbines.
