As of 2024, 30.9 percent of regular chatbot companion users reported initially engaging with this technology out of curiosity about artificial intelligence and chatbots. While more than a quarter of users used these charbots for fun and entertainment, reasons related to socialization and relationships were also common reasons for the initial use. Around 12.2 percent of users used chatbot companions to cope with loneliness, 7.2 percent did so to improve social and conversational skills, and 3.5 percent used the technology seeking a chatbot relationship.
