As of July 21, 2025, Egypt held the largest IMF debt in Africa. This reached over 7.4 billion U.S. dollars, with a prepayment of about 74.6 million U.S. dollars. High inflation and foreign currency shortages, among others, contributed to the country's total IMF outstanding credit. Cote d'Ivoire and Kenya followed, each with debts exceeding three billion U.S. dollars.
