Taiwan shares the demographic fate of many East Asian countries: the densely populated island once experienced high population growth, but birth rates have fallen sharply, and the population is now aging quickly. Taiwan’s total population, which ranged at 23.4 million in 2023, already entered a declining trend in 2020. The further aging of the society is one of the major challenges the region faces today.
