"Hypertension is defined as systolic blood pressure greater than or equal to 130 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure greater than or equal to 80 mm Hg, or currently taking medication to lower blood pressure. Among those with hypertension, treatment is defined as currently taking medication to lower blood pressure, based on a yes response to the survey question, 鈥淎re you now taking any medication prescribed by a doctor for your high blood pressure?鈥"

It was estimated that from August 2021 to August 2023, only around 51 percent of adults in the United States aged 18 and older who had hypertension were receiving treatment for the condition. However, treatment of hypertension increases with age, with 69 percent of hypertensive adults aged 60 and older receiving treatment.
