Germany is setting ambitious targets for renewable energy capacity expansion, aiming to more than double its current capacity by 2030. In 2023, the country had a total renewable capacity of 168 gigawatts, which is expected to increase to at least 374 gigawatts by the end of the decade. Wind and solar will present the highest growth among renewable energy technologies.Â
Germany’s wind power expansion plansÂ
Wind energy is forecast to play a major role in Germany's renewable energy future. The country plans to increase its wind power capacity from 70 gigawatts in 2023 to 146 gigawatts by 2030. This substantial growth will be driven by both onshore and offshore installations. Offshore wind, in particular, is expected to see significant development, with capacity additions increasing in the next years. New onshore wind capacity is forecast to average some 6.5 gigawatts annually until 2030. Â
Solar energy in GermanyÂ
Germany's solar sector achieved a milestone in 2023 with the addition of over 14 gigawatts of new capacity, setting a record for annual installations. This surge in deployment has led to a total of more than 4.6 million solar PV generating sites across the country as of October 2024. Solar power is set to become the largest source of renewable energy in Germany by 2030, with a target capacity of 215 gigawatts, up from 82 gigawatts in 2023. Â
