Petroleum refineries in the United States had a hydrogen production capacity of three billion cubic feet per day as of January 1, 2025. Historically, one of the most common feedstocks for the production of hydrogen has been natural gas. Consequently, petroleum refineries account for a large share of total hydrogen production in the country. Recently, efforts have been made to source hydrogen from renewable sources.
