In order to use crude oil extracted from the ground, the raw liquid must be processed through a refinery, where it is vaporized in a furnace before it then splits into various fuels and other useable materials as it condenses. Oil producing companies can add additional ingredients to the refinement process, depending on the crude oil's consistency and contents, and this can prioritize the production of more profitable fuels, such as diesel or gasoline. In total, less than 90 percent of the liquid injected into oil refineries is crude oil, while ethanol, hydrocarbon gas liquids (HGLs), and other blending components make up the rest.
