The refinement process converts raw crude oil into a number of useful petroleum products, particularly fuel for cars and transport vehicles. Of the 6.46 billion barrels of crude oil refined in the United States in 2021, a total of 6.81 billion barrels of petroleum products was produced (production volume is higher as most finished products have a lower density than raw crude oil). Over half of the crude oil processed in the U.S. in 2021 was motor gasoline, and over 80 percent will be used as fuel for transport in some capacity.
