The government response index measures the national efforts in 176 countries to end modern slavery, looking at legal, policy, and programmatic dimensions. An index score with a maximum of 100 points (best possible response) is given based on 141 indicators.

Nigeria had the strongest government response to modern slavery in Africa with an index score of nearly ** out of 100. South Africa followed behind with ** points. Both countries have addressed risk factors recently. Eritrea and Libya, on the other hand, the two countries with the lowest government response scores, were both involved in state-imposed forced labor.
