Satellites detected more than human-caused methane-super emitter events worldwide in 2022. The majority of these events were leaks from oil and gas fields. Super emitter events can last hours, days, or even several months. These events release hundreds of tons of methane into the atmosphere an hour. The biggest methane-super emitters in 2022 were Turkmenistan, India, and the United States.
