In 2023, most greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in South America came from agricultural activities and land use. Approximately ** percent of all emissions were carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, followed by almost ** percent methane (CH4) emissions, both stemming from agricultural sector. Although CO2 and CH4 emissions from agriculture have had a slow decrease since 2001, nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from the same source have slightly increased in the same time period.
