In financial year 2021, the largest share of Research, Development and Demonstration (RD&D) funding for nuclear reactors in the United States was allocated for enhancing Small Modular Reactors (SMR) technology and projects. Funding amounted to *** million U.S. dollars in FY 2021, which was the exact same figure requested in the congressional budget for the 2022 financial year. The funding request for 2022 for Light Water Reactor Sustainability (LWRS) and Advanced Reactor Technologies (ART) increased from the budget enacted by the U.S. government in the previous FY. Some of the justifications for this request were the modernization of nuclear power plants, and the improvement of their efficiency and their safety.
