Nuclear power has been a significant energy source in the United States for decades as the nation's most important single source of carbon-free electricity. The U.S. stood as the global leader in nuclear power in 2025, with reactors dotting the map across 28 states. Although the energy mix of the U.S. was still dominated by fossil fuels in 2024, the country was one of the largest consumers of nuclear power in the world, as well as the largest producer of this type of energy. However, with the licenses of nuclear plants expiring and maintenance costs soaring, dedicated policies and investments are needed to rouse the U.S. nuclear energy sector.
