Nuclear energy in the UK - statistics & facts
The United Kingdom was the first country to generate electricity from a full-scale nuclear power station in 1956, at the Sellafield site at Calder Hall in West Cumbria. Nuclear energy accounted for one-fourth of the UK’s power mix at the height of its usage in the 1990s. Today, after decades of insufficient investments in the nuclear energy sector and a steady decline since 2016, nuclear power generation is at its minimum below 46 terawatt-hours. This figure translated into approximately 15 percent of the country’s power mix in 2021.
