In 2022, the majority of the South African participants in a Christmas survey who were planning on taking loans for Christmas (51 percent) said they would take bank loans to cover holiday expenses. Another 31 percent said they would take cash loans outside banks, while 18 percent were planning to borrow from family and relatives.
