On the reporting date of April 1, 2026, around ** plug-in hybrids were counted in Germany, an increase of about percent compared with April 1 of the previous year. Growth has slowed dramatically in recent years. In 2022, the growth rate was still over *** percent. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are cars powered by an electric motor and an internal combustion engine. Unlike other hybrid cars, they can also be charged from the power grid.
Still more hybrids than pure electric cars
At the beginning of 2025, the number of registered hybrid cars in Germany, at around *** million vehicles, remained above the number of battery-only electric cars (BEVs). The BEV fleet stood at around **** million on January 1, 2025. In new registrations, hybrid cars were also ahead through 2024. With around ** passenger cars, there were far more new registrations with hybrid drive than with pure electric drive. Their significantly greater range makes hybrid vehicles more attractive than BEVs, especially for consumers who regularly travel longer distances. Even the models with the largest ranges typically do not exceed 500 to 600 kilometers.
New registrations of plug-in hybrids are recovering slightly
On January 1, 2023, the subsidy, also known as the environmental bonus, for plug-in hybrids ended. The end of the subsidy was clearly reflected in the monthly new registrations by drivetrain. In 2023 there was an overall decline of almost ** percent in plug-in new registrations. New registrations in 2024 also remained well below the 2022 level, but they increased slightly year on year.
