In France, more than half of women adapt their behavior when in public spaces to avoid sexual harassment, even during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In 2021, more than out of ten women said they avoid staying out too late, and choose to stay away from certain places to prevent such situations. Three out of five women said they adjusted their clothing and appearance, and ** percent avoided going out alone.
Yet, while acts of sexual harassment are the fault of the harasser, it is precisely these elements of behavior that are questioned, and sometimes used as guilt-tripping strategies by law enforcement when victims try to file a complaint. In 2021, more than half of the complainants who were treated poorly said they were blamed.
