The parties Civil Contract and Armenia Alliance led in polls ahead of the parliamentary election in Armenia in June 2021. The election, scheduled on June 20, 2021, was to be held earlier than planned. In November 2020, after a ceasefire agreement was signed with Azerbaijan returning the territories occupied by Armenia to Azerbaijan, senior military officials demanded the resignation of the prime minister Nikol Pashinyan. Thus, Pashinyan, who was the country's prime minister from May 2018, resigned in April 2021 and was an acting prime minister until the parliamentary elections are held. He headed the party Armenia Alliance. The bloc Civil Contract was led by the country's former president Robert Kocharyan.
