Particulate matter emissions produced by road vehicles in the United States have fallen considerably in recent decades. Between 2005 and 2023, PM10 emissions from road vehicles fell ** percent to ** tons, while PM2.5 emissions fell by ** percent to * tons during the same period. PM2.5 refers to atmospheric particulate matter that have a diameter of less than *** micrometers. They are usually composed of acids, organic chemicals, metals, and soil or dust particles, and are hazardous to human health.
