Municipal waste is mainly produced by households, similar wastes from sources such as commerce, offices and public institutions are also included. Waste from agriculture and from industries are not included.

Municipal waste generation in the European Union (EU-27) amounted to an estimated *** kilograms per capita in 2023, after a second consecutive year of decline. Nevertheless, this value remains slightly above pre-pandemic levels. Amongst EU member states, per capita municipal waste generation is the highest in Austria and Denmark.
