Roughly 22.4 percent of the municipal waste generated in the European Union in 2023 was sent to landfills, slightly down from 22.8 percent a year earlier. The year 2021 had seen the lowest landfilling rate since the beginning of the century. By 2035, the EU aims to have a maximum of 10 percent of municipal waste generated sent to landfills.
