The sales volume of low-malt beer ("happoshu") in Japan amounted to ** kiloliters in fiscal year 2023. Happoshu refers to beer-like beverages with a malt content below 50 percent in Japan. The low-malt beverage was considered a cheaper alternative to beer until tax rates were raised on malt beverages. This resulted in a significant decline in sales in the previous years.
Following the reclassification of malt-less beer (new genre beer) as happoshu in October 2023, the two categories were merged into one tax category.
