While the print publishing industry is shrinking, South Korea’s publishing market has a major driving force: the country’s large education market. In 2023, the transaction value of online book sales in South Korea stood at about 2.4 billion won.

Creative contents in South Korea

While the publishing industry was the largest sector overall within the content industry when it comes to sales revenue, the broadcasting industry recently edged it out. Another segment of significance, especially when it comes to export value and import value was the video game industry. All in all, the content industry has been an important asset for South Korea, as "hallyu" (the Korean wave) is changing the image of South Korea worldwide. It is therefore no surprise that the South Korean government is strongly subsidizing the cultural content sector.
