The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic had a significant impact on the gross gaming revenue (GGR) of the sports betting market in Italy. Due to the emergency and the national lockdown, at the beginning of March 2020 all sports championships were suspended as well as sports betting shops were closed. As a consequence of this, the GGR amounted to ** million euros in March, recording a drop of roughly ** million euros compared to 2019. Especially, sports bets did not register any GGR in both April and May. Overall, the sports betting market lost *** million euros between March and April 2020, compared to the same period of the previous year.
