The Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) of online gambling in Italy rose remarkably from March 2019 to June 2021. Due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the GGR of online gambling in Italy experienced a sharp increase in 2020 over the previous year. Between March and April 2020, the Italian government imposed a national lockdown to limit a rise in COVID-19 infections. During this period, as all casinos and betting shops had to stay close, the interest in online gambling increased. In May 2020, the GGR of online casino games in Italy reached nearly *** million euros. After slightly decreasing to around *** million euros in June 2020, this figure went up remarkably the following year, first peaking at roughly *** million euros in April 2021, then declining to *** million euros in June 2021. In contrast, the GGR of online poker games reached its peak in April 2020, while it decreased in June 2020 and dropped further in June 2021.
