The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic had a significant impact on the Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) of online gambling in Italy. Due to the emergency and the national lockdown, at the beginning of March 2020 all sports championships were suspended as well as sports betting shops were closed. While this situation had a very negative effect on the GGR of the sports betting market, gross revenues of online gambling increased remarkably. In April 2020, the GGR of online poker tournaments rose by roughly *** percent compared to the previous year. Similarly, the GGR of online casino games increased by **** percent in May 2020, compared to May 2019.
