The number of retail and wholesale bankruptcies in the Netherlands fluctuated greatly in 2020 and 2021. Whereas there were only **** bankruptcies in week **** of 2020, ** retailers and wholesale businesses closed up shop in week **** of 2021. The number of bankruptcies was expected to rise due to the downturn of the economy caused by the coronavirus crisis, but financial support from the government seemed to keep many businesses alive. In fact, at the height of the second coronavirus wave in November and December, there were fewer bankruptcies than before the pandemic.
