According to a survey conducted in December 2019, a majority of respondents from south of India believed that the recent government policies such as the Citizenship Amendment Act and the proposed all-India National Register of Citizens were attempts made by the Narendra Modi government to divert attention from serious economic issues like unemployment and price rise. Many violent protests have been carried out in the country since the CAA was enacted into law on 12 December 2019, with large proportions of population agreeing and disagreeing with the government.
