The source adds the following information: "This collection covers national tourism. Data is collected by the competent national authorities of the Member States and is compiled according to a harmonized methodology established by EU regulations before transmission to Eurostat. Most of the time, data on domestic and outbound trips (where "outbound tourism" means residents of a country travelling in another country) is collected via sample surveys. However, in a few cases the data are compiled from border surveys. Surveys are generally conducted on a monthly or quarterly basis."

In 2023, domestic travel was more popular than outbound trips among travelers from all age groups in Bulgaria. Younger generations of travelers, particularly between 15 and 24 years, held the highest share of domestic travelers in that year.
