In 2023, the public debt that Peru's central government owed to foreign creditors equaled 14.4 percent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). In 2019, the South American country recorded the lowest share that Peru's external debt has registered at least since 2000, 7.1 percent. The South American country has one of the lowest percentage of foreign debt in the region.
