According to a survey on substance use in India between December 2017 and October 2018, the state of Uttar Pradesh had over a million people who needed help for opioid-related problems, followed by the state of Punjab at **** million dependents, and Haryana at **** dependent users. In general, the prevalence of opioid addiction was higher in the north-east and north-western states in the country. The proximity of these states to international borders might be a reason that leaves them vulnerable to drug trafficking.
