Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Romania - statistics & facts
The first cases of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 in Romania were recorded in late February 2020. The capital Bucharest was the epicenter of the pandemic initially, though the share of other regions in confirmed cases increased gradually. The drastic evolution of the disease put pressure on the country's health system which faced shortages of medical personnel, intensive care unit (ICU) beds, and personal protective equipment (PPE). The number of PCR tests performed in Romania increased from approximately 32 thousand as of end-March 2020 to approximately 14 million as of end-February 2023. As of the beginning of March 2023, over three million cases were confirmed nationwide.
