Online education in Romania - statistics & facts

Online courses and schooling started developing in the late 1990s. However, the entire online education system had to rapidly develop in 2020 because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In Romania, many educational units switched to online classes though platforms such as Google classroom, Moodle, or Zoom. Despite the availability of online means and technological developments, the coronavirus pandemic caught the Romanian education system rather unprepared, with no pre-established protocols, and medium to little support provided for educational staff. In other words, one month after educational insitutions first closed, online classes were implemented for only six out of ten students, and primarily for subjects such as Romanian language and literature or mathematics.
