Although the origins of silk production lie in China, archaeological discoveries point to the knowledge of sericulture and the use of silk in the Indus Valley Civilization between 2450 BC and 2000 BC. Silk, called Resham in the northern and eastern parts of India, and Pattu in south India is a luxury good.
