mHealth refers to delivering health and public health services through smartphones and wearables, spanning wellness apps, remote monitoring, and mobile access to health information. Global mHealth continues to expand, supported by steady consumer demand and broad reach across platforms. Health and fitness apps surpassed an estimated 3.6 billion downloads in 2024, a mid鈥憇ingle鈥慸igit increase on the prior year, signaling resilient engagement at scale. Supply remains substantial even after store curation, with tens of thousands of medical apps available on major app stores. Adoption is widely distributed: large emerging markets such as India and China lead on user and purchaser shares, while mature markets provide depth and higher average spend.
The center of gravity sits in practical, everyday health management. Fitness and sleep apps anchor usage, and tracking focuses on exercise, heart rate and blood pressure, and weight or diet. Tracking centers on exercise and activity, heart rate and blood pressure, and weight or diet; sleep and menstrual cycle tracking also feature prominently. Two sub鈥憇egments鈥攎edication checkers and contraception/fertility鈥攕how structured growth, reflecting clear use cases and frequent interaction. Intensity varies by region: Android downloads concentrate in India, Brazil, and the U.S., while revenue per download peaks in smaller, high鈥憇pend markets. As usage broadens, experiences trend toward more personalized, patient鈥慶entric support, especially when tracking is paired with guidance or remote monitoring.
The enabling infrastructure is advancing, though unevenly. Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) adoption is high in North America, helping apps and electronic health records talk to each other; elsewhere it is catching up. In Europe, many countries support mobile access to medical records and teleconsultations, but gaps remain in oversight and program evaluation. Privacy is a watch鈥憄oint in the U.S., yet concern levels have not become a barrier to adoption. Germany鈥檚 reimbursed digital applications illustrate how regulated pathways can scale when incentives and evidence align. Many users are willing to share health data with clinicians when it helps diagnose or prevent illness, reinforcing the value of safe data exchange and clear consent.聽
Value continues to concentrate. A small number of publishers command meaningful share; leading wellness apps show durable in鈥慳pp revenue; and virtual鈥慶are platforms operate at multi鈥慴illion鈥慸ollar scale. At the same time, clinical pull鈥憈hrough is strengthening: wearable use is high, many people are willing to share data with clinicians, and perceived effectiveness improves when products connect devices, records, and care workflows. Although use is lower among older adults, the potential benefit is considerable given higher care needs and the value of continuous observation.聽
mHealth has moved from 鈥渁pp hype鈥 to 鈥渃linical utility,鈥 and value pools are concentrating. The next leg of growth is likely to come from stronger data connections between apps, devices, and electronic health records鈥攕upported by wider adoption of Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) and mobile access to medical records. As reimbursement pathways broaden, categories with clear, measurable benefits鈥攏utrition, mental health, sleep, fertility, and medication support鈥攕tand to gain share. Trust will be a differentiator: brands that make consent transparent and protect data thoughtfully should outperform as privacy expectations evolve. In a funding environment that rewards proof over promise, download鈥憃nly products without retention or clinical value will struggle, while platforms that combine outcomes, distribution, and resilient monetization consolidate advantage.
