Intellectual property in Japan - statistics & facts
Japan ranks among the world's foremost nations in terms of revenue generated from intellectual property (IP) royalties. The balance of payments (BoP) for IP charges has generated a surplus each year in the past decade, reaching a new high of nearly 3.3 trillion Japanese yen in 2024. In that regard, Japan has had success in the monetization of its intangible assets. Nevertheless, within the context of the rapidly aging population and a consequent decline in the economic power of Japan, IP is becoming an even more important resource for the nation's business operations and corporate values. The Japanese government suggests that the further advancement of the country's IP values is contingent upon the initiatives of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and regional areas. To encourage this, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) provides regional financial institutions with business proposals for the management of the IP of SMEs. Additionally, the JPO operates support centers in all 47 prefectures to streamline IP operations and mitigate the governance obstacles encountered by regional SMEs.
