GDP in Japan - statistics & facts
Japan had been the world’s third-largest economy by size of gross domestic product (GDP) since 2010 until it was overtaken by Germany in 2023. The depreciating yen against the dollar has been identified as a major culprit for Japan losing its position in the ranking. Furthermore, another candidate is expected to outpace Japan in the near future. Despite having one of the largest GDPs in the world, Japan struggles with low labor productivity and a relatively low GDP per capita compared to other major economies.
