After the Second World War, cocoa was scarce. Pietro Ferrero, a pastry shop owner in Piedmont, Italy, turned this challenge into an opportunity by creating a sweet paste made from hazelnuts, sugar, and a small amount of cocoa. Revamped by his son, Francesco, and named Nutella, the spread launched in 1964 and quickly became one of the most popular spreads globally. Today, the Ferrero Group, which evolved from that small shop, generates over 18 billion euros in revenue and is recognized worldwide.
